Double Fatal Early Morning Fire On Smith Hill
Early Monday morning, a two alarm fire in the cities "Smith Hill" section heavily damaged a three story wood frame located at 687 Chalkstone Avenue. Providence Firefighters were dispatched around 5:00am, with phones ringing in the background for a reported fire on floor two, with possible occupants trapped. Engine 12 arrived first due and reported heavy fire showing from the second floor. A very aggressive interior attack began. On arrival of the Battalion Chief, an additional Engine and Ladder were requested, and he also reported heavy fire on floor three. Lines were dropped into Tower 1. Searches were still underway when Special Hazards reported the first occupant had been found and was being removed from the building. Command requested an additional 1&1, and two rescues, bringing the assignment to a second alarm equivalent. A second occupant was found deceased on the second floor. Multiple Hand lines were stretched and it took about 90 minutes to control the fire.A fourteen year old girl was med-flighted to Shriner's Hospital in Boston for further treatment, where she later died.
