Fatal Overnight Third Alarm In Worcester
Early Saturday Morning Worcester firefighters responded on Box 4-20 to a reported building fire in the area of 850 Main Street Near Hammond Street Engines 4,13,2,5 Towers 3 & 7 Ladder 5 (fast) and Car 4 were dispatched. First arriving companies had heavy fire on the second floor rapidly extending upwards with people trapped in the vacant 2.5 story wood frame. A second alarm was transmitted due to fire conditions and water & access problems, Engines 12,15 and Ladder 4 responded on the second alarm. As A interior operation was initiated a victim was found on floor two in the 3/4 corner and removed to awaiting EMS who were staged on scene as a heavy fire condition took hold of the third floor and attic area. The incident commander ordered the evacuation of the building switching to a defensive operation and transmitted a third alarm Engines 3,16, Ladder 2 responded. Two tower ladders flowed water onto the fire from side one (L3,L7) while crews stretched lines onto the roof of a one story row of taxpayers on side four and flowed water in from that side. Once the heavy volume of fire was knocked down from the exterior crews reentered the structure to chase smaller pockets of fire. The person who was removed was pronounced deceased at a local hospital, The fire was under control in about a hour.
