Fire Destroys Building At Dever State School

Shortly before eleven on Sunday night Taunton fire dispatched a full assignment to 1380 bay street the former Paul A Dever State School for a report of a building fire. As companies responded dispatch notified the chief of a second call from Fremont street reporting a possible brush fire. Engine one entered the property and arrived on Avenue B between 5th & 6th Street with a large one story "T" shaped 200x100 building fully involved. Due to a lack of useable hydrants and water pressure issues command requested a Bristol County Tanker Task Force which brought in tankers from Berkley, Raynham, Lakeville, Rehoboth and Westport. Heavy fire burned throughout the building causing a brand issue to adjacent buildings and brush. Once a adequate water supply was established firefighters setup a ladder pipe and deck gun which contained the fire to the building of origin without incident however crews remained on scene into the following afternoon. A large front end loader arrived and assisted in overhaul and demolition of what was left of the building. The Dever State School was a mental hospital founded in 1952 on the former site of the US Army's "Camp Myles Standish" and consists of over 45 vacant buildings in various states of decay and over a mile of tunnels on the 1,200 acre campus.

There have been numerous arson fires on the property in recent years:
