Four Alarms For A Vacant Tenement In Central Falls
Around 22:00 all Central Falls fire apparatus were dispatched to the area of Hendricks & Wetmore Streets for a reported structure fire. Engine 2 arrived at 53-55 Hendricks Street and transmitted a Working Fire with heavy smoke showing from a vacant 3.5 story wood frame. A aggressive interior attack was initiated with reports of a life hazard in the basement which was heavily involved, While outside Engine 2 had A water supply problem (Dead Hydrant) and was forced to lay feeders from Wetmore & Cleveland Streets. Command requested additional tones and call backs for manpower followed by transmission of a second alarm. Pawtucket Engine 2, Ladder 2, & Lincoln (Saylesville) Engine 56 was dispatched on the second alarm, eventually a third alarm was struck bringing Lincoln (Albion) Ladder 20, Pawtucket Engine 5, Providence Engine 7, Providence Ladder 4, North Providence Engine 4, Cumberland Truck 1, Lincoln Rescue 4, & Pawtucket Rescue 2 to the scene, while a fourth alarm was transmitted for coverage. Due to balloon frame construction heavy fire extended from the basement thru all floors & roof threatening the exposure two building a occupied dwelling of similar type. Pawtucket Ladder 2 cut a vent hole in the side 1/2 corner on the roof then set up a elevated master stream getting ready to go defensive. Companies remained interior for about a half hour but due to deteriorating conditions and a heavy fire load in the attic command ordered the evacuation. Central falls Ladder 1 set up a ladder pipe on side 1/4 corner while additional large stream appliances were put in place on all sides. Multiple crews worked in a defensive operation for about two hours containing the fire to the building of origin which was heavily damaged, Multiple firefighters were treated for injuries of unknown extent. The fire was placed under control at 01:09 The State fire Marshall is investigating.
