Tanker Hauling Jet Fuel Overturns In Attleboro
Shortly before 05:00 Thursday Morning Attleboro "341" dispatched Engine 2 & Rescue 2 to Route 95 Southbound between Exits 2-3 for a tractor trailer verses Car accident. South Attleboro firefighters arrived and reported a overturned tanker atop a vehicle with no entrapment and requested a second rescue. The tanker carrying thousands of gallons of jet fuel leaked a large quantity of product onto the highway and into storm drains along the area, while additional apparatus was dispatched to the scene. Eventually a Tier 2 hazardous materials response was sounded along with a tanker task force, Bristol county structural task force, and a Foam task force bringing in multiple mutual aid crews from Norfolk & Bristol Counties and Rhode Island. Crews worked for hours in a foam operation using a nearby hydrant and tanker shuttles to maintain a water supply while additional crews responded to staging located at the Cardi's Furniture on Newport Avenue which was also the fill site for the tankers. Homes along the affected area were evacuated, residents were brought to the shelter set up at the South Attleboro Firehouse. The highway was shutdown in both directions while multiple agencies worked to stop and contain the leak. No serious injuries were reported, three people were transported to Rhode Island Hospital for further treatment. Both Providence Canteens Responded to provide rehab for the members.
